Homes with 3-4 beds with large yard available for 275 max. Fixer upper is fine, ugly is perfectly fine if we can get a bit lower price.

Older homes with character.

Young families, crunchy-friendly vibe.

Anywhere between 45 min to 2 hours from Chicago is fine.
I still think Elburn or unincorporated St. Charles area will meet your needs.

Redfin is by far my favorite house searching tool - you can look by school, or price and # of bedrooms, and 1 acre lots and zoom out to cover a wide area. They also give you the very telling view from above, so you can see how the house fits on the lot - or any major roads or water or buildings or whatever might be right next door.

I hope this helps!

Look into Wheaton Glen Ellyn and Warrenville. Many beautiful nature areas and paths. And you'd be surprised you can sometimes find a house at your price point. I'd much rather live here than in some of those far out places.

Thanks all. Our house just sold in Muchigan and we are well and truly stumped on where to move to. It's rather depressing actually. I think I'll be posting a new thread as we are considering a whole new approach. Ugh.

BTW - where in Michigan was your house and how long on the market until you got an (accepted) offer? I ask because we are selling our house and it's been on the market for about 2 weeks. Have had 7-8 showings but no bites yet.

Things get WAY easier if you remove the 1 acre requirement.

We removed any land requirements. We are just looking for a big yard now, but at a lower price point (150-230ish). Since we can't find what we want in our price range, and we have a decent probability of moving again in 4-5 years, we are now looking for a small place to save money, where we have a nice yard, modest home with lower bills so we can save, and good resale.

JoePO, we are in Grand Rapids, Forest Hills schools. We sold after 3 days, but the offer we took came in the first day. Great market here right now.

Best I've seen in a long time:

29W450 Townline Road WARRENVILLE, IL 60555

Taxes are incredibly low. Warrenville is an outstanding community. Tons of local white collar employment, great schools, young families and right off the highway.
