Please share any areas that meet these requirements:

Nature-filled area: trees, large yards (.5-1 acre). Bonus points for hills, lakes, etc.

Homes with 3-4 beds with large yard available for 275 max. Fixer upper is fine, ugly is perfectly fine if we can get a bit lower price.

Older homes with character.

Young families, crunchy-friendly vibe.

Anywhere between 45 min to 2 hours from Chicago is fine.

At your price point you will probably have to get pretty far west, and you avoid cornfields if you go northwest by the lakes. Maybe Crystal Lake or McHenry area? Or a smaller town further out that is near these areas?

Agree'd with above, you'll need to be in the far burbs. I'm only familiar with southwest burbs, you might like Plainfield area. I recently sold a home there (in the outskirts) for $299k, 1 acre, 4 bed home. There's some similar homes in that area, in that general price range. Montgomery, IL is not too bad also.

Fox River Grove, Crystal Lake, Algonquin. West of the river.

For more hilly areas you're going to want to be more north than you would think, and just west of the Fox River.

Like mr roboto suggested, check out FRG, CL, Algonquin, and I might also throw in McHenry (the town), Prairie Grove, and Johnsburg.

My only concern for your requirements is young families and a crunchy-friendly vibe. These areas have a decidedly mixed population with lots of extremes on the young vs older population. CL has a lot of families, though. Lake county also tends to be quite conservative so you may want to search locally for that perfect neighborhood once you start zeroing in.

Where's work located?

If you want something with Metra access that is one thing, but if work is in a suburb that really will force tough choices...

I recall this poster from before. If I recall, his work is spread out throughout the region. Additionally, Batavia/Fox Valley area was too congested and busy for them, but I don't know if they changed their mind.
