Is Steger, IL ok? I know it has some really bad areas around it. What can you tell me about Steger other then the google stuff? I might got a job in Harvey and looking for a cheap but safe town within 30 minutes of Harvey to maybe move to.

IMO, Steger is a hidden secret. It's a great blue collar community. You're close to 394 which can take you up to 80/94 to go east/west or north to Harvey. 80 gives you access to 57 to the west and 65 to the east.

We have friends who have been in Steger since 2008 and they love it there. Don't let the location fool you, crime is low, neighbors are friendly, grocery shopping is on Sauk Trail and Chicago Road but that Jewel is technically in South Chicago Heights.

Very little riff raff there.

Can you visit before moving?

Indiana is only a few minutes east. I do know that people that close to the border will frequently go to Indiana as the taxes are lower there.

I'm not so sure about Steger...
Generally more dangerous than 43% of the cities in USA.

I would think about it, but some cheap but somewhat safe recommendations are: Elmwood Park(avg value: 170k around), Franklin Park(160k Avg value), Dunning of Chicago(200k avg value, rent can be very cheap, it depends), possibly Evergreen Park, also pretty questionable. I'd say, since I sell real estate in South Side, West Side, and Logan Square, Evergreen is one of the only safe places which you can consider, "South Side", but is not a really suburb.

TGPII look in Thornton. Very low crime, surrounded by forest, fishing in Wampum Lake, shopping on Halsted in Homewood 5 minutes away. Drive the speed limit and you'll be just fine!

I lived in Steger a couple years ago, and have family there that have lived there their whole lives. It's a good place to live. It's surrounded by a few bad areas but Steger itself is fine.
