Hey, everyone! My girlfriend and I are both recent graduates of a Big Ten college (Indiana University) and we are about to move to the Chicago area later this month. She just got a job in Munster, IN, and I'm looking for work in more of the downtown Chicago area.

Our biggest question right now is where should we be looking as far as living options are concerned? Neither of us want a very long commute, especially during the winter, but more important to us is being in a safe and vibrant area. We definitely are open to being in a suburban area, too. Our budget as of right now is around $1,200/month.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You do realize that Munster IN is a solid 25-30 miles from any part of Chicago that could be considered "safe and vibrant", and that would include areas that might be suburbs. That means the AVERAGE driving commute time would very likely be around 45-50 minutes and if commuting during normal rush hour it would be more realistic to plan on something closer to 60-75 minutes. During weather related slowdowns and back-ups due to wrecks that could soar...

There are not really any good options to get to work in Munster via transit.

What you might consider is maybe living closer to Munster and trying to commute into Chicago for a job in the Loop. The South Shore rail line runs from Hammond to the Loop in under an hour, with decent reliability. Although Hammond can't hold a candle to Chicago for "vibrant" it is safe. Hammond is also far less costly than Chicago (how about under $900 for a 2br/2ba -- Tanglewood Apartments) and it would be easy to have a car (or two) in Hammond, something that would be a giant hassle in Chicago...
