A related issue comes into play here. If you're going straight, and you stop at the stop line (or before the crosswalk), you're likely to get honked at by the guy behind you who is trying to make a right turn on red. There are a few intersections out here by me that are notorious for that.

how far behind the white line do you stop? what if your front tires stop on the line? I'm asking because on some roads, the yellow is quicker and if the speed limit is 45MPH, it takes a bit longer to stop on the red.

I understand that if you cross the white on the yellow but stop mid way through the line, no tickets should be issued.

BUT.. what about stopping on the white line when the light is red?

I stop so that the entire car is behind the line, but I tend to drive the same roads all the time and can anticipate the light changes judging on how many cars are waiting. I almost got caught out on a quick yellow downtown the other day!

That might be the idea but it's rarely the reality. At no time in my life when I drove over the line so I could see traffic did I endanger myself or the cross traffic by doing so. That's why none but the dickiest cop (or a stupid camera whose primary purpose is revenue generation) would bother giving someone a ticket for crossing a white line before coming to a complete stop if they're not pulling into the flow of traffic. How hard is it to put the line where people can actually see the cross traffic?

Why do they make any rule? All you need to know is you risk getting a ticket if you ignore the rule. You choose to go over the line, you choose the ticket. You don't get to decide which do and don't apply to you.

Law enforcement also sets a standard by deciding whether to be rigid dicks or be practical about it. Thankfully, 99% will choose the latter when it comes to pulling up to a white line. It wouldn't surprise me to learn you're the other type.

Lucky for you I'm not a cop then isn't it!

I often wonder just how much money could be made by actually enforcing traffic rules around here (or anywhere really). All you have to do is assign a couple of cops to just issue tickets all day. It's not like they'd be short of work. Plus the roads would be a lot safer too.

These cameras at red lights are kind of tricky. It seems like they keep people from running red lights but at the same time in cases like this one there is no "grace" for lack of a better term. Law enforcement must find a way to regulate camera system.

Here Here!! Can start on I-294 with the trucks use 2 right lanes rule, then the headlights on when raining rule and then the slower traffic must keep right rule.
