The U.S. Census releases "estimates" each year. That's what the 2009 numbers reflect. The problem is that these estimates are notoriously faulty.

That may be so, but it doesn't jive with what I see on the streets. The NW side alone has seen a large scale influx of Hispanics everywhere from Portage Park and Jefferson Park to Dunning and even the O'hare corridor just in the last 10 years.

Addding to the areas which you have mentioned - places like Clearing and Garfield Ridge.

Yeah, the SW side has probably gone from majority Hispanic to "overwhelmingly" Hispanic in the last 10-15 years. Latinos are far and away the largest immigrant group coming here these days and The SW side also has the most affordable housing in the city.

I completely agree with you. I'm from the south suburbs, and we've seen a number of families relocating from Morgan Park, which has been becoming less white (and more black) for a number of years now. Also, the Scottsdale/Clearing neighborhoods used to be nearly all polish and are now becoming more hispanic. Any of the gains in white population the northside, westtown, and near southside have been seeing are basically cancelling out with the demographic trends of the southwest side. In addition, I also think the southeast side and Hegewisch neighbrohoods have been changing quite a bit in recent years.

Those number of the US census are WRONG! There just guesstimates.....not a real population count.Don't rely on estimates becuase they're just estimates. Here are some more estimates from 2008 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates. They predicted Chicago grew not lost people.

2008 Chicago population-2,986,974

btw us cenus predicted in the 90s Chicago would lose people and they were wrong it grew.Wait till the numbers come out.

2009

pop. 2,851,268

Black- 936,505(34.2%)
White non hispanic- 857,989(31.3%)
Hispanic- 770,386(28.1%)
Asian- 132,828 (4.8%)
mixed- 27,649(1%)
Indigenous- 3,434(0.1%)
Except... the percentages for those numbers should be: 32.8% Black, 30.1% White, etc. Something's amiss.

As others pointed out, gentrification is about class, not race. Richer (or actually, better-educated) people have fewer children and have them later in life. Therefore, population counts are a singularly poor way of looking at gentrification, which often actually involves substantial population declines as singles/couples displace families. (Wicker Park's population density has declined by about 80% since its WW1-era peak, but it's probably even busier today since people are more than 5X wealthier.)

I think my neighbors have added 17000 children in the past decade.

Anyone notice if you count up the numbers in the 2000 totals they are 50,000 over the 2,896,000......and if you count the 2009 numbers they are 122,000 short of the 2,851,000??
