I agree that Evanston might be better for you. Winnetka isn't that easy to reach by car during rush hour from the city, whereas from Evanston it's reachable either by car or by Metra. You're much more likely to find a place with parking included there too.

The really nice 1 BR's tend to be 650 + sq feet. Considering many apartment buildings in Chicago are prewar, they are definitely smaller.
Hrrm... my last 1br was 670 + Storage. My 1br now is 850, large living room, large dining room, walk in closet and good size kitchen. I do think some of the units in this building though are the same floor space but converted into a 2BR. I have also seen 2br's in Chicago that have a smaller living room than my own, with no dining room. I guess it just varies. Do you live in a high rise? The units tend to be smaller.

Nope. I live in a vintage courtyard building. My last apartment was the bottom of a three flat walk up.

Have any of your places been condo conversions? Or, are they newer? That sounds like A LOT of space if it were an older place.

It is an older building but I know they redid the interior. The other was a condo in printers row sold as "1 br convertible"

I admit this one is HUGE, I could easily put a divider up to have another bedroom.

I have seen another massive 900+ 1 br and it was a loft conversion with 18 foot ceilings. A different one had a floor plan up, then a spiral staircase going up to the 1br.

Interesting. I've always wanted to live in a loft with exposed bricks and ductwork. I thought that would be a cool experience.

I think the other reason I haven't been in large 1BRs is because I've rented inexpensive apartments. Though now that I'll be combining income with my future wife, we're able to afford a little nicer of a place - now those charming places with 650-750 sq ft are attainable.

So where are all of those big one bedrooms at? I noticed a lot of the 700-1000 sq ft apartments for under $1000 in areas like Albany Park, Rogers Park, Woodlawn, South Shore and other places too hood or too far for me if I am to work in Lombard. Where else to look? I'm exploring Oak Park tomorrow but I would prefer to live in an actual city as the suburbs bore me. Advice?

You could look into Logan Square and Avondale. Heck, look into Portage Park if you like. The fact of the matter is your commute to Lombard is going to suck from any Chicago neighborhood. I don't know what to tell you on this one.

Why not try looking in evanston? Its really nice there and has an urban upscale feel. Short drive or commute to Loop, either train or L. Lots of families but lots of young people. I'd really look into it.

Any thoughts on Logan Square? I found some pretty nice looking apartments online that were renting for $1000. Is parking an issue around there?
