I could google pics of Chicago but I would like to see the images you guys feel exemplifies your city's beauty.
Uh, just search the Chicago board for 'pics' or whatever. All kinds of gorgeous pics of Chicago. Lots of quintessential stuff like this, for instance (but many taken by actual C-Ders):

Actually, the Chicago area didn't get it *quite* as bad on that show (many episodes of which could've taken place in 'Anysuburb USA') as (the fictional) 'Wanker County, Wisconsin,' whose denizens were portrayed using THICK Upland Southern drawls and wearing 'hillbilly'-style felt 'slouch' caps (complete with giant safety pin and wild turkey quill). There's nothing wrong with fictional characters doing either of those things - if they're supposed to be from the rural mountain South (and be grossly over-the-top caricatures, as well). I guess they could be from somewhere else and be psychotic (or just incredibly eccentric), but that's sort of irrelevant to my point.. heh. I suppose I shouldn't be too harsh on the directors, though, given that Fargo (AKA New! Never Before Available! Apathetic Hollywood Writers' Guide to the Northern Midwest) wouldn't come out for another ten years or so...

It is known that residents of Chicago metro knows more of Wisconsin and Michigan than downstate Illinois.
If the states were drawn up by social geographers instead of 19th century politicians, Chicago would be the capital of a state that included northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, northwest Indiana, and western Michigan. see Strange Maps - 38 States | Flickr - Photo Sharing! "Beauty is only deep skin." What's on the inside that matters; as is the people, so is the place; as is the culture, so is society; as is "NEIGHBORHOODS", so is the community. Chicago is a secret because (a) people never been there, but heard notorious things about it. (b) Chicago is just plain to good for some (Not to be rude), and may not be suitable for everyone (c.f Detroit, New York City, Los Angeles, etc.), and (c) People just plain don't care and don't want to know. Remember "beauty" because their beauty is where they live, not just Chicago.

Not only that but on paper Chicago doesn't look like a great place (crime, government, etc.). I have family just south of Chicago, and the actual situation/quality of life is far better than your average magazine article might say.

we all go with our own experiences. mine? every contact i'd made with an out-of-towner both here and when i'm somewhere else and the subject of chicago comes up, the response invariably is:

what an incredibly beautiful city.

i'm either living in a vacuum or don't have a clue what this thread is about. jeeeeeeeez, guys, most people with at least half a brain know what a great and magnificent city this is.

the others....well, i'm not sure i care about what they think.

Chicago is beautiful. More beautiful than NYC or LA, although they would fight you tooth-and-nail refuting it lol. It is exactly what an American city is supposed to be and is a marvel of modern architecture and civil engineering. I know this place has an amazing future ahead of it... I see it, I sense it whenever I walk along Lake Michigan and feel its energy. I am glad that I am going to be able to be a part of that and just hope I don't get priced out too far (because people are going to be given that boot more and more... reality). I see very good things for this city and believe it has amazing potential. Even with the corruption, gangs, violence, etc. You just can't hold a thing that good down. I just hope the Midwestern value system always prevails because that is one of the very best things about the place. I hope it stays true to its roots and doesn't apologize for it. The gang problem will lessen the same damn way it did in NYC as it gentrifies. Those little chicken sh*ts mean nothing, are nothing, and will be pushed out. I would worry more about the way my manicure looks before I worried about having to pistol-whip these fools. And I am skinny, female, white, and short. They should be more afraid of me. Don't underestimate the working professionals. Just because we're dressed well and have no ink on us doesn't mean we wouldn't kill you and leave you in the street for a good laugh.
