If I'm not mistaken NOLA has about 81 murders to date with a population of around 390K vs. Chicago with 109 and a population of 2.6Million.

Just read the book The Wagon by Martin Prieb (Chicago cop) and I can honestly say it's not a job I would ever want. While cops don't have to deal with body removals anymore, it seems like the deck is generally stacked against them professionally - under constant surveillance in their cars, complaints filed against them by thugs and gangbangers who know how the system works, sensationalist press stories, etc. Sure seems like it would make for a depressing career. No thanks.

More like 340K, and I think that estimate may be a bit high. NOLA had 52 murders in 2009 per 100,000 residents, or 174 murders total. The total number of murders has been steady there for the last few years as population has returned.

Still, NOLA and Chicago are apples and oranges crime-wise. In 2009 Chicago had 16 murders per 100,000 residents. But among cities > 1M in population, Chicago had the second-highest murder rate and second-highest violent crime rate (Philly was tops in both categories).

I would have tried out for the recruitment test if they didn't change the age to 25. From what I understand however after the Academy you are always placed in a **** area during the grave yard shift. Seems like a decent break in period but probably sucks(gotta pay dues though), I think it's like a year or two from Cops I've asked. I think the weirdest part however is maintaining your civilian life. From what I SEE it seems like once you become a cop, that can consume much of your life. Suddenly all your friends are cops, you're always talking about overtime/the guys you picked up last week/other job annoyances. But I don't know ****.

Being a cop can be like any other profession really. It's all about how you deal with stress and having healthy outlets. Any profession can consume you if you let it, whether it's a trade, medical, financial, etc. There's plenty of Wall Street investors, doctors, plumbers, etc. that let their life be consumed by their job. Finding a healthy balance is very important especially in a high stress job. Must surround yourself with healthy relationships and a healthy lifestyle. And believe me doing this job you will still see some of the most sad, twisted or heart breaking aspects of life and society. I've been shot at, have had to give CPR to a dying baby and it wasn't enough, I've dealt with people on the worst days of their lives, or they have attempted to give me my worst day ever. But because of a loving wife, great people around me, my love for working out and having good hobbies, I feel like mentally I'm ahead of the curve. If anything I get to see life at it's most raw and real everyday. I wouldn't say I'm jaded, I'm just a realist. I know there are truly evil people out there and the day might come to it being a life or death encounter. But I also know there are many many good people out there, and that's what I keep around me.

Some of the burbs in Chicago and LA are just as bad as some city districts. Maywood, Harvey, Cicero, Aurora in Chicagoland for example. And you don't have all the backup.

And in my experience 9 out of 10 times we'll rush there going Mach 2, then get on scene and then the caller gives us attitude and then wants nothing done.
