40 - 50 min isn't horrible for most folks these days. I have friends doing 2 hour (one way) commutes to the burbs as that's where a lot of jobs went in the Oughts.

I can get from the Belmont Blue Line to the Loop is less than 30, but since I work in the South Loop the total trip is always 45 minutes minimum by public trans.

Ought = zero (you'll also see it spelled aught)

So the oughts are the 2000s

Good to know on Belmont-S Loop. I'm guess Belmont-UIC door to door is about the same.

Personally, I wouldn't do a 1 hr commute each way. If I had to work in the burbs and endure that kind of commute, and if it came to it, I'd rather just move to a smaller city in the MW like in Milwaukee, live 15 min from work, stockpile cash, and buy a small 1BR in Chi I could enjoy on the weekends. That's just me though. 10 hrs of work a day + 2 hrs commute + 2 hrs of essential daily stuff (errands and the three S's) leaves no time to enjoy the city anyway.

People with 2 hour (one way) commutes have friends?

likely depends which specific building for UIC, the blue line can get you into the heart of the campus pretty fast, but the university has spread out now.

I have no idea about that neighborehood, but my chinese friend lives in Forest Park (that is next to the blue line). She says that there are some relatively safe and nice places there and a lot of people who work or study at UIC rent there.
