Okay maybe I overreacted on the sports. But definitely the 10+ years and living outside of two or three neighborhoods are definitely requirements for me.

One of my biggest pet peeves are people who do not leave their east side bubble (yes and I am specifically talking about Lincoln Park and Lakeview because from what I have seen it happens a lot there). Most of the people I have met that live there never want to go outside their neighborhoods and it's like pulling teeth to get them to come out from there. I'll never forget when a group of Lakeview people told me that they don't go to Wicker Park because it's ghetto and too dirty. Others because there are too many hipsters, etc. I hate that mentality. I know that most people that live there aren't like that, but this is where I see this problem happen the most. Oh also in the Near North Side as well.

Now that's just sad. I find this more apparent in transplants, though. I know people who live is your mentioned neighborhoods that do venture the entire North Side, even the West and South Side so I guess it depends on who you keep in your company. Personally, I couldn't imagine not venturing into another neighborhood. It'll be stifling if I didn't; I would consider it unhealthy. I mean, it's not like NYC where a borough is so large that one can literally not leave.

I am not saying everyone in those neighborhoods are like that, but from my experience I have seen that happen the most. Needless to say, that group that did say that about Wicker Park, I did stray away from them. I only really hang out with them when I go hangout in Lakeview, Lincoln park or Viagra Triangle. Other than that, if I invite them anywhere else, forget about it.

Indeed it is sad, in fact I find it somewhat close minded and ignorant. I am not saying you have to explore the whole city, but really what is the problem that you can't venture out?

You people with all your rules and requirements for what constitutes a Chicagoan are absolutely ridiculous. Nobody cares about what you think makes a Chicagoan. Except maybe the op. It's a personal identification and your opinion is irrelevant. Are you going to tell an immigrant from the phillippines who worked their ass off to come to the USA, got their nationalization and are proud, u gonna tell them they're not American? They haven't met your requirements?

If you identify with being a Chicagoan then you are and don't listen to the pretentious overly proud natives. Who cares if someone only likes to live in Lincoln park? Judging someone on that is just as annoying and closed minded as the people you're speaking out against.

This entire city was crafted from immigrants/foreigners and they had no rules on who could be a Chicagoan and how much time it required to live there.

Wow, talk about overreacting. It's not like anyone really here believes this as true. The OP asked for our opinions and we gave them. I was just stating my opinions. If the OP wants to say that he is a Chicagoan, the hell do I care? I don't know him. I was just expressing in my mind how I, the keyword "I" define a Chicagoan. Just like how you have your opinions that some of us natives are being pretentious that is your opinion.

You also missed my point entirely. You can live in Lincoln Park all you want I have no problem with that. I lived there during my college years. It's the people that refuse to ever leave Lincoln Park because everywhere else in the city is a ghetto, unsafe or not up to par with Lincoln Park. That has been more of a personal experience. Also, I was just stating those are the neighborhoods where I see that type of behavior.

No.

Alright reading back on it I overreacted. Sorry. No I dont live in Lincoln park I live in Ravenswood and I don't identify myself as a Chicagoan but my only point is that someone who identifies themselves as one is perfectly right in doin so regardless of amount of time lived in the city. Everyone has multiple identities and they're important. Im a southern californian seattleite in chicago Just like Irish people get annoyed when so many Americans call themselves Irish. They don't understand It's a matter of pride of heritage and the op is proud of her Chicagoan heritage. Chicago is cool. And she feels it's a part of her identity.

On my way to Door County I passed through Milwaukee. I really liked the place. I now dub myself a Milwaukeean.

Yeah that's really my point. nice reading comprehension. Really similar to being born there, living there for four years, having parents from there and identifying with the place.

I've lived in Chicago for 3 years and don't consider myself a Chicagoan. I dont like professional sports. I have no memories of growing up in the area. Most people that I've befriended are transplants. Hmmm. I don't feel like a Chicagoan.

Most true Chicagoans have an attitude about them (accent, neighborhood loyalty and midwest attitude) that transplants can't have. IMO, thats what makes Chicago, Chicago.

Will I ever feel like a native?
