A friend of mine who's strapped for cash is considering moving to a cheap room on that block to save some money.

I am not, in any way, anti-South Side as a whole, but my impression of that particular area is that it is not safe. It seems to be part of the Englewood/New City/Washington Park murder zone. It has multiple hard narc busts within a block of it, including distribution. It is not very densely populated, but has what seems to be an above average number of thefts, burglaries and muggings.

Is there any reason to think I'm wrong about that area? The guy would be reliant on mass transit, and mostly going to the Red Line I think. I also didn't see much in the way of grocery or other food stores.

He's definitely city-savvy, but even so it seems like a rough area even for trying to save on rent.

Your assertations are correct. Actually, I was driving on 51st to get to Halsted on my way to the Sox game last night. Seems like a pretty shabby area with not much going on. I'd definitely have my reservations about using the Garfield red line stop with average frequency as well. I remember seeing lots of rooms for rent near Archer Heights and Brighton Park, near the Orange line. Did he check that area too?

The lower the better. We're not even talking studio, we're talking border/room rental type situation.

It's not a good area at all. If it's possible to get some kind of dollar amount, I may be able to help.

You can't live in hotel or hostel for more than 30 days per law.

Anyway, even a really cheap hostel is going to run $30/day, which is $900/month, which is not in h is reach right now.

He currently rents a room for about $400/month, which he just barely manages to pay. The place on S. Lowe is apparently $250/month, which he feels would give him breathing room.

I feel bad for whatever's going on in this dude's life that he's having trouble swinging $400 for a roof over his head. I'd still find a way to swing it than take a $150 discount to live in Back of the Yards. Maybe a north side flophouse like Hotel Chateau would be a better option but I don't know that they're much less than $400/mo anyway. Same with YMCA.

Maybe McKinley Park, in a basement or attic or above a store? (I don't think it's possible for $250 but it can't hurt to look around.)
