I guess you're using the term "the city" to mean downtown (aka the Loop). If so, at least I understand you now. But I should just point out that most Chicagoans use "the city" to talk about everything inside the city limits of Chicago, i.e. anything that's not in a suburb. UIC is in the city limits, so I wasn't sure what you meant at first when you asked about commuting from UIC to "the city."

Anyway, UIC is just west of downtown. If you got on a train at one of the UIC stops, you'd be in the Loop in less than 5 minutes. There are freeways on the northern and eastern edges of the campus. If you cross the one to the north, you're in an area that includes Greektown (which is really only Greek restaurants now, not Greek people) and a residential area with lots of former industrial buildings that have been turned into apartments and condos. Under the broadest definition of the term, this area is part of the West Loop. The rest of the West Loop is east of another freeway (90/94, if you're looking at a map).

The other residential area nearby is University Village to the south and west of the campus. If you want to search for off campus housing yourself, go to a site like Craigslist and use key words like UIC, West Loop, and University Village to see what's out there.

Ah, sorry for the confusion. I'm making the transition from small town to big city so I'm not yet familiarized with all of the terms.

I'm trying to find a place where I can continue to have a good time, and recieve the appropriate education I need to pursue my selected career, by the information everyone has given me this is exactly where I'm interested in relocating.

Before I look more into all of these options I wanted to thank everyone for their input, especially Kevin J for your interest in my topic. Everyone was extremely helpful, thank you again!
