I was on google browsing for some info about Chicago and all I kept getting was "breaking news" stories about shootings and killings. I read several pages on the incidents and was surprised on how blatant and ruthless some of the killings were. I know violence isn't as bad as it was 10 or 20 years ago but this is 2011 and Chicago streets in certain areas are still warzone and battlefields. I mean I see more gangbangers on the corners slinging and just hanging out then I did 3 years ago.

Just today at Adams and Oakley I heard 6 or 7 gun shots about a block or 2 away from were a funeral was being held. I just can't believe it's 2011 and this kind of stuff is still happening. And I know some people will say "crime is down and all that, but do you really think it is? I mean we get 465 murders and the police headquarters call that a "good year".

I'm just curious what other chicagoans think about this. Is Chicago violence out of control? I think so.

It's not good. That means about 1 in 5000 people here gets it every year. There are many 10,000, 20,000 population towns across the country that just don't have, practically speaking, any homicides, ever. So there is always room to improve.

NYC has about 18 million people and only had 500 homicides in 2010.

So, by that standard, yeah, we are doing pretty damn lousy.

Well things were far worse in 1812, just ask William Wells.

Homicides are down over 15% from last year. Does that sound like things are out of control?

It's also somewhat disturbing and perplexing when you consider that there were only 1,000 homicides in all of Japan, with a population of 125 million, last year, and 600 in England and Wales, which has a population of 53 million.

The U.S. w/ a population of 300,000,000 has about 13,000 per year.

Not perplexing at all. You just have to understand the very different demographics of USA vs. Britain vs. Japan.
Like it or not, statistics make it clear that some groups are more law-abiding than others. Especially with regard to *violent* crime.
