Dunno. Maybe there is a run on the cars at ohare this week? All I know is that I am saving $75 on a 2 day rental by taking the blue line to the chicago stop.

I am pretty unfamiliar with Chicago. Is the area around the Chicago Blue Line stop fairly safe? I will be walking a block or so with a suitcase during the day. It looked okay on google streetview, but just wanted to make sure it wasn't an area I was going to get mugged as soon as I got off the subway (if those places even exist in chicago).

Yes, you'll be fine. There is some low income housing scattered around the area just west of the expressway, but this is also an area that has actually weathered the recession with more businesses than it had previously.

Also, since the Chicago stop is where many people transfer to the Chicago bus to get to the Mag Mile area, you won't be sticking out by having a suitcase. Its a common occurence.

I put in a September 26-29 rental at O'Hare into Hotwire and this is what I got:

Economy car
Unlimited mileage
Counter in airport; Shuttle to car
$30.95 per day
Passengers4
Bags2
Chevy Aveo, Hyundai Accent, or similar*

So maybe there was a temporary car shortage on the day you were inquiring about.
