I could probably google, but I'm admittedly lazy -- where is Chicago this year on murders? up or down from last year?

Down, substantially. Which makes the chickenlittleism that much more curious.

Numbers recently posted in another thread

Murder:
2000: 410
2003: 403
2008: 338
2009: 307
2010: 315
2011: 275
(-33%)

Violent Crime:
2000: 32,636
2003: 26,507
2008: 23,763
2009: 22,748
2010: 20,612
2011: 19,072
(-42%)

To really put it in perspective, through year-end:

Murder:
1990: 950
2010: 436
(-54%)

I was in high school in 1990 and surely don't remember nearly the amount of media coverage with double the murders.

I agree.
Back when I was little, the homicide rate wasn't that big a deal and it was like 3 times as much

It was obvious back in 1990 "The Media" didnt care about the struggles of minorities. They make sure you hear about it now!

I agree that a certain amount of it is economic conditions. I hear people tell me about how it's not usually as bad as it is right now that have been here a lot longer than me. I am constantly asked for money on the street, at least a half dozen times a day. A lot of them honestly just seem like decent people who are down on their luck. They are going to claim turf all over the city, there is no way of avoiding them. Once they know they can get money and charity in a certain spot all that happens is the names and faces change, that's it.

Crime in Chicago is by the 'hood. Crime may be down overall, but that doesn't mean crime in X or U or even J neighborhood has seen anything but an increase. Maybe one solution is to move to an entirely different location.

I have one issue/question about these statistics: 2011 isn't over yet. Is the sample based on the calendar year or some point in the middle? For example, if there have already been 19,072 violent crimes and it's only October, then aren't the numbers likely to surpass 2010 numbers by year end?
