If you ask most folks I know where is the "east side" they will either say a)Chicago doesn't have one or b)there is an area springing up with highrises between E Wacker and E Randolph that is called the "new east side".
Yes, it is, because that's what it's called.

The East Side is south of 95th street and east of the Bishop Ford. Folks should remember that Ed Vrdolyak was the notorious boss of the East Side. Ewing Avenue and 106th street are the main drags. Remember the Blues Brothers jumping an open bridge? That was 95th street on the east side. "Steel City", boat yards, salt piles and scrap yards are all on the east side.

People who say there is no east side are not that familiar with Chicago nor have they ventured outside their comfort zones.

Technically I would think anything east of State could be considered "east side," but obviously a known and defined East Side exists.

This is a nice write-up:

East Side :: Welcome Page

Chicago's East Side is almost surrounded by water. Its name comes from the fact that it is located on the east bank of the Calumet River and its nickname is the "Island". Stephen A. Douglas, John Wentworth, and Elijah K. Hubbard were interested in new developments when the Army Corps of Engineers developed a plan for improvement of the Calumet River and an establishment of a harbor in the early part of the 1800's.

The East Side is an official neighborhood, as others have already noted, on the far south side of the city, bordered by Lake Michigan, Indiana, the Calumet River and there is one other Chicago neighborhood to its south-called Hegewisch. There is another official neighborhood called South Chicago, that is just north of the East Side.

The East Side is home to The East Side Chamber of Commerce, The East Side Bank, East Side Savings and Loan, East Side Library. There is a Chicago Public High school on the East Side called George Washington HS.

A portion of the Chicago Skyway runs through the East Side, just before it becomes the Indiana Toll Road.

Here is more info on the East Side.

Those are incorrect borders for the East Side.

The East Side starts at 92nd street to the north, not 79th.

Stoney Island Ave is too far west to border the East Side. The western border of the East Side is the Calument River, which is just east of Torrence Ave.
