In the past eight years I have been in Chicago, I have gone from art student to administrative assistant in Corporate America. The paycheck is nice, but careerwise, I feel completely off track. I studied painting at art school when I first came to Chicago. When I graduated, I worked at the Merchandise Mart selling fabrics to Interior Designers. I was laid off. Then was an administrative receptionist at an architecture firm. Was laid off again. Then went through a serices of temp jobs, at one point working for three temp ajencies at once. I developed a good relationship with the ajencies I worked for, which lead me to the opportunity of being an administrative assitant for the Corporate Consierge department of a Financial Firm. One one hand, I feel very fortunate to have a job with steady wages and interesting people. I have learned a tremendous amount. But, I am board, and just feel like I am not where I belong. So, it might be a broad question, but does anyone have any suggestions for turning my career back to a creative track again? Heck, I would even move if I had to.

You don't say how long ago you went to school. But if you do not have any experience with computer graphics programs you could take a few of those. Again, you would have to break in through temp agencies but if you are well liked there it could open some doors.
Web design is also a big plus. Photoshop expertise is in high demand.
OR you could design stuff on your own and try to market it on the side which would be rewardsing. Like licensed merchandising - that showcases your own drawing style. Like cards and T-shirts and wrapping paper, and stuff.
I think there is an "artist's marketplace" book if I recall, that you could get a better idea on what jobs are out there for you.
Also, the occupational outlook handbook that is on the internet will help you. Check the occupations you may be interested in and see what qualifications you will need to get started.
Also, check the trade magazines and trade sites, advertising age, and commarts.com, etc.

Is being an art teacher an option? Design is an option too thats what I'm trying to get into currently. Besides that I'd say just keep painting maybe show some stuff in galleries or restaurants or whatever. I know it can be tough, being any kind of of artist is hard work sometimes. I'm in the same boat as you.
