I'm just curious. What's really stopping more hotel casinos and casinos from opening up in the downtown area?

I read it may have had something to do with opposition from churches.

I'm not saying Chicago should go all vegas or anything but a few Casinos would most definitely improve nightlife.

Ask the governor; he just vowed to veto a bill that would grant a downtown casino license.

Cleveland has a new downtown casino. I would think we would want to try to catch up with Cleveland.

"Catch UP with Cleveland?" Are you serious? . I certainly don't think downtown is lacking for entertainment options! There are 3 or 4 casinos within driving distance of Chicago. The Governor has strong feelings about the expansion of gambling in IL. People talk all the time about corruption in IL and Chicago - gambling is a corrupt industry - sounds like a perfect match.

Agreed. Leave the casinos to places like Cleveland and NW Indiana. If you want the type of nightlife those places have, bring them to Chicago. Personally, I prefer Chicago's nightlife as it is.

I don't think Chicago lacks "nightlife" opportunities. Gamblers have outlets for their addiction, near and far.

Catch up with Cleveland? OKAY. Yeah, because the entertainment in Chicago is so lacking with all the plays, musicals, clubs, bars, concert venues, etc. Come on. Casinos are shady places, especially if anybody can go to it. Yeah it makes revenue, but have you ever been in a normal casino in say half rural MN or IA where it's the only casino within 40 miles? I don't want that crap downtown.

the majority of the people that go to casinos aren't the type to spend time downtown. most can't afford to go in the first place, let alone spend $20 on parking.

I would greatly prefer not to see them in Chicago, personally.

They would also have to be extra, extra, extra careful in the development lest they turn into Disneyland for the Outfit--which basically built Vegas.

I think that's what happened, if I remember correctly, with one casino out in the suburbs, they were going to build it and eventually discovered it was mob-backed and put the kibosh on it.
Are you kidding? Detroit is making over 170 million a year on the tax from casino or 15% of there general fund budget for the year. Why do you think Ohio put a casino in Toledo? To prevent Ohioans from going to Detroit and spend their money.

I think a major difference between Detroit and Chicago is that Chicago actually has, like, a tax base to begin with. I doubt a casino would significantly add to it, especially with lots of nearby competition. $170 million isn't exactly chump change, but Chicago gets more money than that from parking tickets.
