You are correct ..it was Bocce in Nichols ... and let's not forget the wildcat croquet matches on Rockefeller lawn .. wearing mostly white was strongly suggested .. and I do remember Jarts making an appearance in Nichols... Once... Bad Idea in retrospect ..

I lived in Hyde Park when I was in grad school 40 years ago. I'm contemplating moving back to Chicago in retirement as I'm tired of heat and sun (no kidding) after 30 years of it. Are there any safe areas where you can buy small affordable houses with yards, or is still mostly apartments and expensive houses?

I wouldn't really say the housing stock in Hyde Park has changed dramatically in the last 40 years. There are a few newer buildings, but the general trend has been toward more dense development like townhouses and high rises. Many of the apartments have been converted to condos. I'm not sure where you're moving from or what you consider affordable, but Hyde Park has some pretty expensive housing by Chicago standards. I can't imagine that you'd find a house with a yard for much under $600,000. However, if you're interested in a townhouse or a condo, there are plenty of those that can be had for affordable prices in Hyde Park.

40 years after leaving Hyde Park, it still feels boring and sleepy unless you are involved directly with the university, giving you a ready-made social life. But it's much safer; the boundaries of Hyde Park have been pushed back a bit and the area has breathing room. I'll stick to the North Side - when there's something going on in Hyde Park, it's a short drive.
