I spelled it Nort on purpose to show my Minnesota cred.

Edit: I'm actually not from there originally, but lived there for years, learned to talk Minnesotan, have gone to the state fair, embraced cheese curds and hot dish, and have even come to tolerate the passive-aggression that is the lifeblood of the entire state, but I can't get behind lutefisk. Sorry.

It shows. Maybe I'm becoming cold blooded, who knows. I was just outside and walked around in dark jeans and a dark t-shirt, and didn't find it terribly hot out. I wasn't sweating either. I walked for over a mile too. Something weird is going on with me ;-)

Now this is a key piece of information that makes all the difference, though I'd say 2 miles is the threshold to consistently benefit from the lake's tempering effects. Living 4 miles away myself, it's a crapshoot at best. I remember the first day last year when it hit 100 throughout most off the area, it was only in the mid-80s in Irving Park. The next couple days after that and this time around... no such luck. The vast majority of Chicagoans do not get consistent benefits (or any benefits at all) from proximity to the lake.

Perhaps. I am aware that if you're in, say, Elgin, that it sucks a lot worse, but it makes sense because part of Elgin is next to rural land.

You don't even have to be in Elgin. Just being in Dunning means you don't get the lake's cooling effect 99% of the time. Right now the official temperature reading for the city of Chicago is 100 degrees, taken at O'Hare. Downtown, it's 86 degrees.

Downtown as in, the Loop? It's always 10 degrees colder in the Loop even than where I live in Gold Coast.. pretty amazing. Weather Underground says it's 93 right now in the West part of the Loop, and 97 where I live.

You are right. But this weather is just as bad as in the south. I lived in Memphis and nothern Mississoppi for a few years and the heat was as bad as here for most of the summer. I was so glad to get away from it or so I thought. haha
