Does anyone have any experience with University of Chicago's Graduate Housing? Buildings to recommend, areas to avoid, etc. Or any other non-University managed/owned suggestions for a graduate student? Thank you.

I don't have any first-hand experience with the graduate housing, but I think all the university-owned buildings are in good areas. I believe some of the buildings are more geared toward families, others toward couples, and still others toward singles. There are plenty of other options in Hyde Park if you don't want to bother with the university housing bureaucracy. The local land monopolist is MAC, but there are other management companies and independent landlords in the area. Most of Hyde Park's housing is very old, and that includes the university-owned buildings. So if you're looking for more modern amenities, you should probably look to some of the lakefront high rises.

Dealing with university housing is 10 times better than dealing with MAC. Most of the buildings are old, as are most in Hyde Park. A couple are newly renovated, like building #25. #27 and 31 are really nice as well. I would image living in the 5 buildings south of the midway would make grocery shopping more difficult. They are all in safe locations and I think all are near bus routes. Maintenance responds pretty much immediately.
You could also check out UChicago Marketplace. Lots of grad students live at Regents.
