I am moving with a roommate from central Illinois to Chicago and was looking at apartments in Old Irving area. Specifically roscoe at N Pulaski Rd a safe area? I will be a freshmen in college this year. Would it be safe for me to walk to the blue line day or night?

What college? Seems like it might be a long way to some.

Old Irving is mostly boring old people and younger immigrants trying to find a quiet spot away from the bad neighborhoods.

Pretty safe.

Here's hoping you don't grow old, you're boring enough already.

And yeah, Roscoe and Pulaski is safe enough.

Actually, it seems as though OIP is seeing a lot of younger families moving in. It's definitely not a hopping college scene though.

And yes, plenty safe.

Obviously you have never been.

Old Irving is not full of old people. It's primarily families and many of them young families, like with married couples in their early 30's to early 40's with children or teens. Also there are clusters of young people as well. Around the Irving Park Blue Line you will find a lot of young professional's in their early 20's to early 30's. On the contrary that are not that many old people, at least not that visible.

Is Old Irving Park boring? No not at all. Is it exciting? No not all. There are enough places to go eat and just enough bars to go to but none of them are super trendy or exciting. It's low key neighborhood, that is safe and gives you the basic amenities you need. Although Roscoe and Pulaski really is not Old Irving.......that is more Avondale which has a completely different vibe.

It's not all old people, and it's not all "boring" people per se, but they're boring in the sense that they might not go out much. OIP is very safe, but yes it's not even close to a center for any sort of night life. There's some decent restaurants there though not nearly as many restaurants/eateries/bars as some other areas.

The portion of OIP south of Addison has a bit more crime than north. Nothing terrible, but enough that one should be aware of it. If you're planning on walking to/from the Blue Line at night, IMO you're better off doing it from the Addison stop rather than the Belmont stop. Addison stop is probably closer anyway.

And yes, it's fairly boring.

Hey , my former college-posse fifty-somethings that live in OI with their wives, kids, and Bernese Mountain Dogs all think it's a hoot !!! ... Seriously , nice area , and we can't make the assumption that all college students prefer living in a party town-SpringBreakEveryNight-Animal House environment, can we ??

So how is Avondale then?

I'm going to Le Cordon Bleu. I can't afford a two bedroom in Lincoln Park.
