Looking at buying a condo on the 800 block of Grace St. How is the area for safety? I would be walking to the Sheridan or Addison red line stops daily, and to Lake Shore drive for afternoon jogs. Any areas to avoid?
Thanks!

It's pretty safe. There was something called the Hotel Chateau, an SRO, near there but it's being gut rehabbed right now and the neighbors say they felt safe almost right away when the residents moved out. There's also a nice new high rise (Halsted Flats) going up there as we speak.

The area is fine and IMO improving from a little bit of shadiness it's had in the near past. Pretty safe area.

Totally fine. That area is actually on the upswing right now. As someone posted the Hotel Chateau got gutted, and they're building a fairly large market rate rental unit right there as well. Was just reading too about a whole block of buildings about to be rehabbed along Broadway there near Sheridan.

It's relatively safe. Late at night there is some sketch activity in parts of Lakeview around Belmont. As a whole, though, the neighborhood is reasonably safe.

Common sense goes a long way in Chicago.

You have to be aware of your surroundings all the time.

There is a crime wave occurring in Lakeview lately. How overblown the wave is is debatable. I recommend renting for a year and getting a feel for the neighborhood before buying.

Lakeview is a big area, and a "crime wave" is not happening in Lakeview East It's hardly a real crime wave. It's more of an increase in crime in a police beat from years past.

1) It's very very very safe.

2) No.

Hence why renting for a year is the way to go. Evidently my and my friends' experiences in Lakeview have been drastically different than others. Overall Lakeview is a great place to live, but I feel calling it a simple increase in crime is completely disingenuous. The nightly muggings and assaults and tension-filled atmosphere are substantial.

Sounds like area residents really need to pressure Tunney or vote him out.
