Go away harrier. Go back to your big suburb los Angeles where it takes you 1 hour to drive 1 mile and where teachers work on days they don't get paid just because the city is in so much debt.

500 killings in Chicago, which has a larger population than Philly, Detroit and New Orleans put together but these 3 cities together saw 910 killings between them in 2012, and 866 in 2011, which was twice as many as Chicago's 432 killings in 2011. This is why rate of killings are the true measurement, and something that the Chicago media doesn't understand or doesn't want to understand as 2012 wasn't the first time they labeled Chicago the murder capital when it's rate of killings annually were far from the highest. They also did it in 2003 and 2008.

Thank you for putting this into perspective. There is so much fixation on 500 murders. Yes, it isn't pretty. However, Chicago has a population of 2.6 million people. 500 murders in a city of over 2.6 million people does not measure out the same as in a city of 1 million.

No doubt that this is not really about Chicago or about murders. In my opinion, it is about the President. Chicago is held up as the "Sodom and Gomorrah" of the USA. It is widely ignored that Baltimore has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, and has a murder rate much worse than Chicago. Rather, this is about bashing the President, and Chicago is used as a metaphor for the President.

the 10th member of a club of much, much smaller cities with much different socioeconomic statuses?

yeah, sure, that makes sense.

people that focus on chicago violence at the expense of violence in every other major city in this country do a great disservice to reality and the very issue they supposedly have a problem with. it's basically like saying "you're life only matters if you live in a top tier global city". it's insanely backwards.

Then there must be a lot of crime going on in your skull. Because I can't imagine what would lead someone to believe this to be true.

In addition to what you have just said, most of the time, it isn't even about Chicago or its problems. In this current administration, Chicago is held as the "Sodom and Gomorrah" of America. It is held as "everything wrong" with America. Detroit is conveniently ignored, Philadelphia(which is also an alpha global city) gets ignored, New Orleans gets ignored, Baltimore, Newark, Oakland, etc. Cities with higher murder rates than Chicago get ignored.

Honestly, people are just really naive. They're going to read a Yahoo.com article saying Chicago is the murder capital based on raw numbers and take that as gospel. My ex (who is apparently well educated and has a good job) texted me the yesterday and was like "I see your favorite city is the murder capital of the US." And I was like, "Uh, ok buddy, why don't you actually look at the rates. When you adjust for population, that distinction goes to your favorite city New Orleans" (and it actually is his favorite city). No reply. I loved shutting him down and it reminded me of why it didn't work out. Because we are on difference intelligence wavelengths. :P

Wow, so a state with a population of 1 million has less crime than a city with a similar population and density has nothing to do with it.

You are one smart cookie, I am impressed. You and Harrier should get married, two peas in a pod, soul mates made in heaven.
