Coming from the Bay Area where people are super fit and live pretty healthily, I'm curious about Chicago. It's extremely rare I've seen someone obese here.

Texas and other middle states I've been to shocked me with the degree of obesity everywhere...and I feel a bit uncomfortable being around people who don't care to take care of themselves, and appear slovenly (sorry, it's true). How's Chicago?

No it's not rampant. You will see it more than in SF for sure, but nowhere near what you see in Texas. The only areas it's noticeable is more in the poorer parts of the city, but outside of that it's not rampant. Now you do see more meaty and chubby people on a regular basis, but obese, not rampantly, but you do see it.

There are many Chicagos that a person can experience. In Lincoln Park, or Even Wicker Park, you will not see a lot of obesity. But in the poorer or more working class areas of the city and suburbs, you will see quite a bit more of it.

There are areas of Chicago where you'll see a number of obese people and then a number of areas where you will not see that many.

There remains a certain curious poltical/demographic dimension to the distribution of the obviously overweight -- folks that literally appear to feed at a trough and represent folks with a certain sort of "whatever" attitude toward unhealthful living are not surprisingly in this category. Obvious example include the CTU president and the Mayor of the relatively large area that includes Toronto, I wonder what sort of crazed SNL type "Super Fans" might be elected here should we have a super-regional consolidation of politican fiefdoms ...

Once you experience your first winter in Chicago, you'll understand why some people have meat on their bones, and the notion of drinking to stay warm.

Here's a site with stats. Looks like IL is getting thinner (28.1% down from 28.2%), while our neighbor to the east is getting bigger (at 31.4% from 29.6% obesity rate). CA is also getting bigger at 25% up from 24%.

How does the obesity of a place affect you? 3% more obese people isn't going to change your luck one way or the other in meeting and dating the opposite sex. Even 6% more isn't. If it does, then that just shows your own sad nature. Playing the percentages, instead of being able to work with the ones that are eligible/fit, even if it was 50% is pathetic.

They are everywhere. If you don't watch yourself, one of them may knock you over and sit on you.
