According to Bankrate's online calculator, when you take into account all the OTHER differences in COL between DC and Chicago (not just salary), 70k in DC translates to 56k in Chicago. So Marothisu's original guess was right on the money.

I'm originally from Chicago, moved to DC for a job opportunity. I am in Sales so there really isn't a paycut, but the COL is noticeable with housing, but basically a wash with everything else.

As a city, Chicago blows away DC in my opinion, if you are living in the suburbs I find Metro DC to actually offer more than Chicago suburbs. I do miss being so close to the ocean, mountains, NYC but the tradeoffs were worth it to me!

Chicago also feels like a more established city, where as DC seems to be changing (for the better) every year.

Heck I really doubt that even the mot wildly out of whack COL calculator would suggest DC suburbs are even 10% more costly than a desirable part of Chicago, certainly not 20%. That is just goofy.

You are misrepresenting his post. He gave a lot of valuable information to the original poster. No need to nit-pik. That said, there isno way a $70K salary in DC equates to $55-60K in Chicago. It's more like $70K DC / $65K Chicago.

I also agree with Prelude1 above... as far as urban fabric, things to do, etc., DC is simply not in the same conversation as Chicago. Chicago's on an entirely different plane and you will witness it when you move here. I envy your moving experience.

I love DC but I agree about the city thing. Chicago is just simply much bigger and offers more variety of things IMO.

So the COL is lower in terms of the housing.. but a wash with everything else? As far as what?
