Frankly, you're lucky it wasn't me. If it had been, I wouldn't have come out and said a word. I would have let you walk away, put on my coat, gotten out my sledge hammer, and smashed it through your windshield. Then, I would have walked away. I would have done this in full view of my neighbors, and you no what? Not one of them would have have ratted on me.

You would get the breaks beat off of you too!

There aren't enough spots for the cars, period. I don't care if it took an hour, if everyone digs out a spot, there will be a dug out spot when they return. I left an empty spot yesterday morning, I'm not 'snatching' anything from anyone. This is plain opportunism to claim spots on an otherwise busy street. If I could work a shovel I would gladly shovel out more than one spot to help my neighbor.

I am also glad that it wasn't you, I don't like jail and you don't like the morgue, so we're both better off.

Two things:
First, I agree that "dibs" is BS.

But, second: If you have a broken arm, how'd you dig your car out in the first place?

Dibs is some BS. Everyone who parks on the street has to dig their cars out. If you leave, you are not owed your spot back. People who put objects in parking spots are really idiots.

If I were your neighbor and saw you, you'd be talking to the police. Only morons take a difficult situation and turn it into a crime.

Ah, the annual "dibs" thread. BTW, this isn't just a Chicago thing. It happens in a lot of densely populated cities (or the densely populated sections thereof) in the Snow Belt.

I can respect dibs for a couple days if you actually dug yourself out of a spot. What I can't respect is:

1) Indefinite dibs
2) Claiming dibs after pulling out of a spot without actually lifting a finger to clear it.
3) Dibs with 6" or less of snow that isn't deep enough to significantly impede parking
4) Dibs on a spot someone else shoveled out.

I kicked and brushed as much snow as I could out of my spot Monday morning to get out. By no means was it a perfectly cleaned spot. I saw plenty of half-ass looking spots with chairs in them yesterday. My car is AWD so I don't require a lot of prep work to park.

If there was a spot yesterday full of snow that I could have parked in I would have. I considered parking in front of a hydrant and then arguing the ticket with the city but I should not have to do this. I don't want to benefit from anyone else's labor, but I need to park my car somewhere and without "DIBS" there is always a spot on my street.

uh oh...internet tough guy alert!

(not only would you not have done that, you would have driven around looking for a spot someone else shoveled out for you).

I think you are lucky someone did not come out and break the other arm for you.
Find a place in the city to pay to park your vehicle then take the L or a cab during the winter months.
It may be more expensive but not as expensive as the potential damage to your luxury vehicle because you parked in a spot someone else spent time cleaning the snow out of.

Nobody is going to break my arm I assure you. I do agree with you though, and I may try to take the train although it's a mile walk on both ends and I can't wear gloves or a heavy jacket with this cast. I don't mind working hard but I don't want to die in this windchill. If I could wear my ski jacket and layer up more it would be better. I figured the street parking thing would suck, but I didn't realize that people would abuse it and hold empty spots in neighborhoods where there are more cars than spots.
