I wonder how many have left Illinois, in the meantime?

You would have to think, that, at some point, the ridculous housing costs of coastal America would draw more people to cities like Chicago, which are located on a huge lake. But there are those who cling to the notion that " it's not the same as the ocean"...

Since this is supposed to be Chicago area, maybe the Illinois number represents Illinois residents who moved to counties in the Chicago MSA but are not in Illinois (like Lake Co, IN for instance)?
I believe he posted two different sets of numbers. The first was inflow to Cook County, the second was inflow to the Chicago metro (not including inter county moves within the metro area).

Marothisu, can you explain?

Yes one is Cook County, and the other is all counties in the Chicago MSA summed.

Let's remember that there are four counties in Indiana and one in Wisconsin that are part of the Chicago MSA. Illinois is counted because people could move from Cook County to Kenosha County, WI, or Porter County, IN, both of which are part of the MSA. Make sense? These do not count as an in-state move, but Cook County to DuPage County would, and therefore I don't count it.

Also if you look on the map site, you can see the net flow to/from each county. For example, there were more people who moved from LA County to Cook County than there were moving from Cook County to LA County (by about 900-1000 I believe).

I would love to see qualitative data on WHY people decide to move to Chicago, especially from warm-weather states (SoCal, Florida, etc). I wonder if the majority come for school/work, or if they visited once and decided the city was their next move. I know this data doesn't exist, just saying.

*Note to die-hard Chicagoans, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the city. Just curious as to why.

^ Agreed. There can be many reasons for a move to anywhere. You can also get the data by dimensions such as educational attainment and income.

So for example for Cook County, 785 of the 2500 who moved from LA County had a Bachelor's degree.

Thank you for posting! I'm think what Bluefox was thinking.

I would be interested to see how the states rank in relation to their population. I guess that would be just a matter of dividing the number that moved here by the states population, and then reranking the list by that percentage.

^ Or divide it by the number of people who moved out of state instead of total population.

There have been more than a few visitors to this City-Data site who have visited Chicago, fallen in love with it, and vowed to move at the earliest possible moment, but I doubt that they're "registered" anywhere..

Cue "MoItaly", Chicago's biggest booster, and erstwhile Chicago tour guide..

Interesting read, coming at it from a different angle: Curious City: Census statistics partly reveal how many Chicagoans were born in the city | WBEZ 91.5 Chicago
