We are moving to Chicago from out of state (Detroit). I have found a place to rent that is fairly inexpensive in South Shore....Colfax and 79th. Is anyone familiar with that area? What's it like?

Are you black or white? If you are black it would be OK for you to move there but I would still advise against it. There is a reason it is cheap. In Chicago you get what you pay for and you will pay more to live there with busted car windows, stolen cars and/or burglars. Anytime you drive through a neighborhood and they have burglar bars on everything, that usually means it ain't a nice place to live. If you are white, it would be suicide for you to move there. You would not last 2 days!

I don't think it's the worst in the city. Are you white though? It's only 1% white in that whole neighborhood of over 60,000 people. You would be VERY out of place.

Just yesterday or the day before you said you're not moving until June or July. Now you say you've found a place to rent and it's only December. And you wonder why people think you're pulling our chains. Do us a favor -- either come clean, or go away and stop wasting people's time and testing our generosity.

Drover-
Please DO NOT make assumptions about me. There is this thing called the internet. You can actually look for places to rent on the internet....can you believe that???? Oh my, what a concept. So yes, I did find a place while searching the net....that doesn't mean I am moving the same day I find it....I would like to get some idea of prices and neighborhoods. I do not plan to pack up the moving truck and come to Chicago and start looking......you must be the guilty one, since YOU are so worried. NOW YOU ARE WASTING MY TIME! I have NO idea what you mean by "come clean"....you must be a very lonely person to have so much time to worry about SILLY stuff.

Avoid the South Shore area at all costs - no matter what race you are. And the 79th & Colfax area is the worst of the worst.

That is preposterous and alarmist. A white person living in South Shore would be in no more danger than his/her black neighbors. I find it offensive that people are willing to blow this guy off as a troll because he's looking to move to a "bad" (read: black) area.

Having actually been in and around that area often (just this past weekend, as a matter of fact), I can tell the OP that it is not the best area he could live in, but it's not anywhere near "the worst of the worst". There is a major train line (Metra Electric) very close that goes downtown. There is not much in the way of shopping and eating in the immediate vicinity.
