It's the U.S. way:

I'm amazed that there are actually people out there who think like this.

What a world.

The only solution to controlling where your taxes go, is to not pay them. Or am I missing something? Do you all get to tell the state/USG how to allocate your tax money? If so, I want in.

It's called the voting booth.

This is Illinois. Nobody should be shocked if the state puts up money. I don't even know why either of these two issues is up for debate.

You don't know why it's being debated? Ummm....because IL and Chicago are in a financial hellhole.

That's like someone who just declared bankruptcy deciding to go buy a new $50,000 car. It's hard to understand why they'd do that.

The library should be in Chicago, the city and state government should not be in the business of funding the library.

Can't argue with that. Somewhere in Hyde Park or Kenwood would be ideal

I am opposed to the state fronting any money for this. I would be even more upset if the thing was located in Hyde Park or Kenwood. Those areas are not in need of anything like this. Property values are strong, the community has solid employment from UofC, hospitals, existing related academic / cultural institutions.

Before he got involved with elective politics he was a community organizer, and the success in organizing folks who'd seen factories shut down fits with the story of the SE side. This could anchor nicer development than would otherwise be attracted to the area and likely would be a much bigger draw than anything else planned.
