I plan to donate to Dvorak Tech Elementary this time - it is one of the poorest performing schools in the system, but this particular teacher is attempting to make things more exciting. Perhaps if teachers there can get the kids to come to school (the truancy rate is 34.9%), the kids will actually succeed. I had a friend who taught 1st grade at this school before it became a *tech school* and it has taken her teaching the grandchildren of her first students to get to a point where they are beginning to read to their own children and she has hopes that this class of kids may make it out of the inner city.

So many of the teachers are trying hard in the face of continuing problems.

The problem's not the kids, it's the parent(s).

Right, but read the post. By teaching the children she is trying to help the children as future parents. The current children are the grand children of her first students and the grand parents are reading to the children at home. I hope she is successful.

She isn't the particular teachers on donors choose. My friend is a reading specialist now, but she taught 1st grade for years. The teachers on the site are mostly young and idealistic. They want to get the classrooms up to a high standard for their kids.

We went to the Winnetka garage sale every year and got a big box of children's books for $25.00 (end of the sale, as much as you could put in the box for $25.00). Those went into her classroom library, but also were leveled and given to the kids to take home. For most, these were the only books of their own they had ever had. She also got all the kids library cards, but that turned out not to be so great as the parents would not take the kids to the library walking through gang territory to get there. My friend is an amazing person.
