Yeah that's funny...it's not news when it's 900+/year or 2000+/year but when it's 400-500 it's news.

Note that Chicago and NYC don't make the list at all.

FAQ on how they got their ratings:

East St. Louis is #1, Flint, MI is #2

You can find the safest cities as well.
St.Louis didn't make the top 10 but Michigan has 3 in the top 10. Not surprised about East St.Louis, that can get like Dodge City when Matt Dillon ain't around.

While per capita murders are important, and tell more of the story, there is no denying the raw numbers.

More people are killed in Chicago than any other city in the USA (or any other first world city for that matter). New York City, which has 5.5 Million more people, had less total murders. Even with all of the NYC and LA are expensive excuses, NYC and Chicago have similar demographics in terms of poverty/income.

Detroit, New Orleans, etc. are not world class cities, those cities having higher murder rates is not a story.

Having grown up in NYC, I remember when all the top stories on the news were about NYC murder rate, but that was in the 90s when internet/social media was non existent.

Why do you say it wasn't news?

NYC's murder rate was constantly in the news back in the day.
Beyond that, every depiction of NYC in the movies or TV was that it was a crime-ridden hellhole.

I would hope so (not literally). Chicago is the 3rd largest Metro Area on North America.

The point is, the media doesn't explain that Chicago's crime relative to its size is not in the top 10.

That was my experience too. The difference is there are more news outlets now than 20-25 years ago.

Part of me is happy that there is so much attention placed on the crime that is going on in Chicago. Things cannot be fixed if people are not aware of them.

However, on a national level, nothing has really been done to fix them. Therefore, all of the coverage is somewhat pointless. Yes, it is true and unavoidable. It is not part of my daily life as I do not live in any of those neighborhoods. However, it does give the entire nation (and world to a degree) that Chicago is nothing but a gun range which is not the truth whatsoever.

What has the local government done to stop crime? What about the national government? Let's cut funding from programs that really could help those that need the help like in the mental health fields. Or actually real programs that will get the kids get off of the streets?

Chicago still has the most murders, and isn't close to the largest city, so, yeah that's a likely angle. Not saying it's fair, but the same thing has happened with other cities.

Alright maro, I don't hate you, and I think many of your posts are knowledgeable. But again with per capita. These are actually lives being lost, vs. non existent lives. Detroit has it bad, but comparable to other cities Chicago's size, including NYC, which is much bigger than Chicago, those crime stats are lower than us. Detroit is much worse than Chicago, as it's all out bad, but 85 shootings is not good.
