Los Angeles and NYC both have below average murder rates for U.S. Metros.

Is it a major issue? yes. what incredible suffering takes place because of it. does it have any real effect on those thriving areas of Chicago that are doing so well? not really. and sadly, it doesn't even register with most people there other than its effect on our city's reputation.
Is that still true? I know it used to be a major railroad hub.

Also, the thriving areas are seeing plenty of crimes these days, just not homicides.

I seriously doubt that the homicides are correlated with Chicago's status as a big intermodal freight hub.

I mean, are Kansas City and Omaha more violent than St. Louis and Milwaukee? I doubt it. The former two are also big intermodal freight hubs.

Use to be? It is now more than ever, about 40,000 train cars a day pass through the city, easily the largest in the country. Then throw the huge Amtrak hub on top of the freight.

Kansas City has built up a lot facilities as well since Chicago was so overloaded with trains trying to come through. Chicago is trying to sort it out with CREATE spending many billions to modernize the railroads around the city.

Detroit is much worse than Chicago, as it's all out bad, but 85 shootings is not good.

The issue with Chicago is that it's a city that is rich but has regions that are probably worse off than Detroit when it comes to murder and violence. The overall city homicide rate is not in the top 10 but if you look at the homicide rate for the areas of the city that account for 90% of the homicides, they probably have comparable if not higher homicide rates than detroit or NOLA.

Detroit is rich, too, it's just that a much higher percentage of wealth is in the suburbs there. Here, there's a decent amount of wealth in the city. The fact that the Gold Coast and Englewood exist within the same corporate limits is endlessly fascinating to some people for some reason, but there's an Englewood equivalent in every U.S. city with a homicide problem.

Anyone know what NYC and LA's numbers of shootings were for the same 3 days?
New York also had a fairly violent Fourth of July weekend, though not nearly on the same level as Chicago. Shootings have been on the rise there, in part because of a diminished reliance on Stop-Question-and-Frisk.

Please point to me the exact sentence where I claimed that if you use statistics on crime, you don't care about peoples' lives.
