We love chicago, but not totally sure we would want to live in the city. The job in question is near navy pier.

What we really want:
Home under 1 million (would prefer much less, like 550k)
4 bedrooms, 2 bath
Family friendly, safe neighborhood is essential
Back yard, we have dogs
Decent car commute to job location (near navy pier)

Perks
Large lot (.5 acres+)
Public transport to the heart of the city (just for visiting)
Larger home, 3k sq/ft+
Newer home build/move in ready
Subdivision with pool, etc
Close to nature
Close to Montessori private schools (elementary/middle)

Can anyone make suggestions? What are the car commutes like?

Tons of people drive to work in Chicago, even in the CBD. Arguably too many people drive to work. Lots of companies still offer their employees subsidized parking.

Which is exactly why I'm surprised to see someone with the intention of driving to a place with such easy access to public transportation, bike lanes, and the lakefront trail.

My husband is a physician and has to have access to a car for emergencies. Plus he would be working at various locations in the day. You couldn't pay me to drive in chicago! I love how mass transit friendly chicago. We visit often and we walk or take the trains.

I think I would say reasonable by chicago standards. Honestly, I have no idea what that means. I would hope an hour or less, but if two hours was the usual, then that would be what we would consider.

15 minutes would be awesome but I don't think its possible without living in a condo near there and I bet they are out of budget. And I would die a slow horrible death in a condo. Not my style.

Default Well I don't know of ANY ....

..."subdivsions with pool, half acre+ lots, 3000 sq ft homes" inside Chicago's city limits, so I guess that means the OP kinda wants to live in the suburbs.

If they'd be OK with a municipal pool that would open up some possibilities, but that half acre lot is still going to be a limiting factor...

Yeah I'm not sure we want to live in the city. But I put those as perks, not must haves.

Perhaps this thread should be moved to the suburb board?

We live in Houston, in the city, and those things aren't too uncommon, besides the size of the lots.

I don't know what a municipal pool is. We mostly swim at our community center. My kids love swimming and its really our go to all summer long. Then again, maybe the summers are tolerable in chicago so swimming wont be as important.

The size of the lot is kind of a dream. We have dogs and I don't like bothering my neighbors, so a larger lot would be nice. Plus my kids don't really have any room to go out and play here, so thats a dream of mine as well.
