I am moving this week and need a place to stay. I am looking for a place like the image of Chinatown. Apartments with character, low rent, and doesn't make a huge deal out of pets. I will be working downtown Chicago off Earie St and will be using public transportation.

Any apartment suggestions will be appreciated.

I also do remodel work if anybody knows of a fixer upper.

Thank you all!!

So basically you want a cheap place - the Chinatown illusion isn't to say you want to live in a Chinatown? What exactly is your budget per month for housing, including utilities?

I can go up to $1600 if utilities are included.

How many bedrooms are you looking at for $1600/month max?

I would prefer 2bd unless I can find 1bed with office, loft or den.

The $1600 is fine even if it is heat included.

Not sure where you're coming from, but your price doesn't necessarily connote "low cost" in Chicago. I mean, you can't live downtown on that budget for a 2 bedroom or 1 bedroom + den, but you could live in most areas of the city on that budget IMO.

What exactly are you looking for in a neighborhoood besides buildings with character (i.e. bars, walkability, public transit, more space between buildings, etc)? That will help pinpoint down a bit since there's so many areas I could list.

Also West Erie Street or East Erie Street?

I will need easy access to public transportation, I will grocery stores, nearby and dining, and cafes. My daughter is moving with and it would be nice if she was able to be near a college age crowd. We want to be near the active night life where there is something to do.

It is West Erie St. And i dont want a long commute.

Are you referencing the film Chinatown? Not that that would really help me understand what you mean...

Actually when i think of Chinatown I think of SRO flophouses. Interestingly, there seem to be a lot of those left in Chicago.
