I work in the Loop and enjoy getting out to various neighborhoods for lunch a couple times a month. I've hit quite a few taquerias in Pilsen and am curious about extending my trips out to Little Village. I've read many of the threads on here re: LV and am aware of its reputation, which many of you say is well-deserved. Is it advisable/safe enough to head to LV for lunch and back via Uber? If so, any tips? Or is it just not worth the risk?

As long as you are careful about the number of tacos you order it is, yes. They are often huge. The restaurants over there aren't like some Tex-Mex places where you can order four and still be hungry.

You'll be fine. I liked La Casa de Samuel when I visited.

If you look 100% White absolutely it's safe.

Mind you, almost nobody in the restaurants speak English though. I lived there for a year and usually point out stuff on the menu with my finger. However, I typically order the same thing so I always get my stuff across.

Are there any good restaurants (not taquerias, restaurants) there any more? The wonderful Mi Tierra is permanently closed.

It's fine - if you are worried, I'd suggest going during the day. Go on a weekend and you'll see a bunch of families outside on 26th st with strollers walking around. Little Village gets a lot of crap for its crime, but when you take in consideration the population, the per 100K rates are not nearly as bad as most people think. There is definitely gang activity there, but if you are interested, go with a friend during the day on a weekend or something.

26th St has tons of restaurants - yes there's worthwhile stuff there. There's tons of places there that the average north side foodie has no idea about because they think it's too dangerous to even venture there (or equally as bad, they don't even know what Little Village is).
