Oddly enough, I've been registered to vote in Cook county since 1991, yet have never once been called for jury duty.

..of course now that I've publically stated this, they'll probably call me next week.

Your drivers license/state ID also puts you in the running, not just registering to vote

I'm still trying to figure out how/why someone in Elgin got summoned all the way to 26th and California. I thought they had "zones" where each courthouse draws primarily from people who live close by to prevent exactly this kind of thing from happening.

My daughter just went there for jury duty. Got a ride there. Not a good neighborhood. On the jury duty form, there's a number you can call to request a different venue. If it's not too late, I'd ask for the one downtown which is easy and safe to get to via public trans. If they keep you late, it won't be a problem. I wish we'd have done that, less hassle.

She sat all day, never got called, never got asked a question, and was dismissed at the end of the day. Bring a book..

Are you registered yet?
They get information from your voters registration, drivers license and social security; at least thats what I remember them telling us when I was serving.

A good alternative but if you get caught late you may have a hard time getting a bus back to Union Station. If you do take the bus...when you arrive in Union Station turn right as you come off the platform and walk as far back to the right as you can and you should come out on Clinton Street. Once you get outside, if you walk across the river you are going the wrong way.

They don't use any logic when assigning jurors to a county courtroom. Depends on luck mostly. I usually went to Markham but the last time I got sent to 26th & California. I think I also went to one downtown. I always lived around Midway.

They send a questionnaire to you long before you get called to serve and I believe there is a question about living outside of Cook County.

Definitely not a good neighborhood...though I've heard some of Chicago's neighborhoods are changing for the better since I left 5 years ago. Still I would be leery. Remember that there are a lot of law enforcement around the courthouse and because of that you probably won't have any trouble. I was scared to death but it was unfounded.

Yeah, some luck. To live in Elgin which is 95% in Kane County, and yet to live in that tiny sliver in Cook County and get summoned all the way down there... I don't think it's possible to live any further from 26th and California and still be in Cook County.
