I believe the now riskier sections would be west of Damen Ave.

If you have never been to the 24th and Oakley section (which is 1 block east of Western) it is like a place frozen in time: A GOOD TIME! From speaking to people in the area, reading social media news, etc. it seems to be a great area.

Some incredible Italian food there. Bit of an oasis.

Is that considered Pilsen still? West Pilsen maybe? I know it's called Heart of Italy historically.

I'm from Milwaukee, TBideon. But there seems to be variances in maps on boundaries/names. You can see it as part of the Lower West Side (Community Area). But not only have I seen it called Heart of Italy, but also a portion of Heart of Chicago. The area extends a couple blocks west, just west of Western Avenue. Either way, in that particular area, it does have some great restaurants and some great people! A nun from St. Michaels was walking around and blessed a medallion which she gave me. I keep it in my car on my I LOVE CHICAGO flag. I have walked through, biked through, and driven through Pilsen (from 18th and Halsted west to Harrison Park), alone and with my kids. I have always felt safe.

Bachanalia's is my favorite place. They just had a street fest there last week. It's still Pilsen, Pilsen goes up to Western, no such thing as West Pilsen.

Slats Grobnick, I am a pure Ignotz fan. It is true that some refer to the area by Pilsen, but I have heard or read the Heart of Chicago/Heart of Italy used as well. As far as the Festa Pasta Vino block party, it brings me down from Wisconsin every year. And whether I arrive/leave via 290 or 55, I have never had a concern of safety. I have read in the Tribune unfortunate shootings that take place within a mile or two of the 24th and Oakley area. As I said, truly unfortunate. Yet, it would never stop me from travelling to spend time in the area.

I've never heard of the Festa Pasta Vino party. Is it truly a block party or is it more open to everyone?

Vlajos, Festa Pasta Vino is indeed a block party (open to everyone for a requested donation. I guess I called it a block party because it's always held on the same block on Oakley Avenue between S. 24th and S. 25th Streets ) that is offered every year on Father's Day weekend. I have seen it advertised on Chicago June Festival sites. Whether you are Italian or not, it is a very enjoyable time! I am Mexican/Croatian, but I'm always considered a "paisano."
