Best Tacos I've had are Rubis on Maxwell street market.
Too bad they're only open sundays during the market hours.

There's so many Taco spots in Chicago that it's so hard to filter out exceptional ones because we can't visit them all.

So in yours guyses opinions, what's your favorite taco spots?
The ones that always tend to come up in the top 10 are places like Atotonilco, El Milagro, Zacatacos, Pacos Tacos...

What's your neighborhood favorite or city favorite?

Chicago_Person, I'm glad you posed this question, and I look forward to reading the responses. I, too, have had tacos at Maxwell Street that were delicious and authentic, over the years. But I can not recall any of their names. But you are right, those tacos are very good! ... I used to enjoy Lalo's on 26th Street, but they closed a couple of years ago... so do not crucify me, but my kids do enjoy the tacos at Garcia's in Lincoln Square. I JUST asked the two daughters and they both said so.

I’m not sure if they’ve opened a Chicago location yet, but it’s just a matter of time. Try Burrito Padilla, they have about 10-12 locations in the west “burbs”. Wheaton,Lisle, Carol stream, etc.

This is possibly a more competitive division than hotdogs or Italian beef.

^Scouting the top contenders with Master Jay in Little Village

This area wasn't part of our tour on Monday, but I had my first taco de lomito a couple months ago at La Casa Del Pueblo, Loomis/18th/Blue Island, south end of the six points. This isn't really a thing in Texas outside of maybe a couple of oddball places (say, Tacodeli in Austin). It's definitely not of the mainstream Tex-Mex tradition to which I've noticed a lot of Mexican restaurants in the non-Chicagoland Midwest tend to hew closer.
This seems to be an organic Mexican/Cuban fusion that's probably more or less unique to Chicago. I've still got to form a proper point of reference to say which of those are the best. I enjoyed what I had.

The Mexican food scene here is certainly distinct from those in Texas and the Southwest. Mainly I've been getting my stuff at the Windy City Market carneceria (Pulaski/Milwaukee) and cooking it myself. Definitely less expensive that way.
Absent of that, my local go-to is El Gallo Bravo midblock west of Belmont/Milwaukee. This one doesn't stray all that far from the Tex-Mex norm, but it does everything I want a 24-hour walk-to-walk-in joint to do. Its true superpower is being open late on the way out of Sleeping Village. It runs circles around a lot of similar places in Texas I've been to.

jfre81, I THOUGHT that picture looked familiar! That was a great day trip! And although we didn't grab tacos like we thought we might, we had some great old school Italian food! .. great pic of the clock in La Villita!

My favorite joint for steak tacos is La Pasadita. It's located at 1140 N. Ashland Ave. in West Town.

This family-owned restaurant doesn't have a flashy exterior, but the food offerings more than make it worth your while.

Another plus is the late closing time. It's 1 AM Sun.-Thurs. and 3 AM Fri. and Sat.

El Milagro gets my vote! They also make the best tortillas!

La pasadita has been the spot for a long time. Back when gangs were running the area. Now it's hipsters... or I think it's passed the hipster stage now. Point being that it has survived gentrification and it's a legit spot.

Milagro basically makes the Tortillas for the Great lakes Chicago metro region. I know places in middle/North Wisconsin has them.

Were those lomitos tacos pork or beef? I presume the cuban fusion reference implies pork, but I am curious, being a huge fan of both mexican and cuban fare
