I will be starting this summer as a Chicago Teaching Fellow, and as you probably know, we work to serve schools with the highest need. That being said, I can't afford to take a car to Chicago. Are there any neighborhoods/schools that you recommend I do NOT apply to? I'll will be relying strictly on public transportation, between 6am and 7pm. I know neighborhood safety is a topic discussed ad nauseum, but I would like to know if there are any "stay away!" areas if I will be relying only on train/bus. Thanks for the input!

Also, any general input on chicago public schools would be helpful. I've been to a few, but they didn't seem too bad. Then again, I wasn't in a bad area (Fulton blvd east of pulaski). Again, any comments are appreciated!

Most of the schools with the highest need are in bad areas, but I would stay as close to downtown as possible. There are schools near the White sox park and the are also a few police stations. The transportation is good around there.
I think that we should know a little more about your options and go from there because I can think of plenty "in need " schools and areas.Do you have complete freedom to choose any one?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've been searching for schools that are in proximity to downtown. My general "search radius" has been divsercy/cicero, east to armitage/sedgwick, south to 63rd/king dr, and west to western. I know it's a large area, but I'm just trying to get a feel for where I'd like to teach.

And yes, I can select any CPS school (except for charter schools). Of course, they encourage me to pursue schools with the highest need.
