Hello,

Tried searching online but didn't get anywhere and the Illinois SOS office doesnt seem like it is open.

I returned my leased car today and left the license plates on it. Did I have to do anything with the license plates or my vehicle registration or can I just let them expire on its own.

Thanks!

Call the leasing agency NOW and ask for the plates back. If they dont return them, contact the SOS to have them cancel the plates. Should anything occur with those plates on a vehicle, the first one the authorities will come to is you!

The dealer will probably handle it. I would contact them. When I've traded vehicles in, I've never taken the plates off.

Thanks all. I took the 1.5 hour trek back to the dealership to retrieve my plates. Lesson learned

The car title and registration is in the leasing company's name, and it's theirs to do with as they please. If they need the tags in your state, they will notify the dealer to remove and send the plate to them.

You walk away from the car on the termination date, and the car and the plates are no longer your responsibility at all.

This is potentially wrong information, at least in Illinois. While it's possible the OP's leased vehicle was "loaned" to him while the registration and title remained under the dealership with Dealer plates, in a long-term lease the registration is in the lessee's name. The plates belong to him and there is a risk leaving them on the vehicle after returning it to the dealership. It's always best to take your plates off before you sell or return a vehicle, and the law even requires it. New registration has to be obtained every time the vehicle is transferred to a new lessee, the dealer can't just leave the plates on it and transfer to a new owner unless they're Dealer plates on a loaner.

There can be questionable people working in low-level positions at dealerships and stolen registration plates is not uncommon.
