An I-PASS is supposed to make life easier, but that was not the case for a Northbrook man who sold his truck years ago but keeps getting fines on his I-PASS account.

Leonard Hoffman got a surprise when a truck he sold more than six years ago started racking up I-PASS tickets on Illinois expressways, and on top of it all Hoffman wasn’t even in the state when the truck blew through those tolls.

"......he admits to leaving the plates on the truck and didn’t think much of it as they were set to expire that same year."

Dumb ass! #1 rule in Illinois is to take the plates off before selling.

My buddy had a a similar event but with a car and tickets .

He sold a car a decade ago ...the car was found stripped on a lot ...it had no plates or registration stickers....he was fined thousands for dumping the vehicle ...they tracked him through the vin .

Evidently the buyer never registered it and stripped it for parts ..so my buddy still shows up as the last registered owner ..at this point he no longer had any copy of the bill of sale or anything to prove someone else was the owner .

He is still awaiting a court date.

Taking plates and stickers off can mean nothing in this case since it is still your car until you prove otherwise

This is why it's a great idea to complete and send in a Seller's Report of Sale.

There is a link on this site to the Illinois form. (I can't send the link to the document itself because it immediately downloads when you click on it.)

Why does the form say:

Quote:
Under penalties of perjury, I hereby certify that the foregoing is true and correct under the laws of the United States of America.
but not also invoke Illinois? This isn't a federal document and a federal department will never handle this matter.

Meanwhile the Texas VTR-346 form states:

Quote:
Certification – State law makes falsifying information a third degree felony
I, the above listed transferor, am notifying the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles that I have transferred the above vehicle, which was legally owned by me and had a Texas title issued in my name. I understand the department will notate the transfer on the vehicle record, and under Texas law, the vehicle will remain in my name until the new owner(s) transfers the title into their name.
It makes sense to invoke Texas law since car registration is a state function.
