Mostly, we need cops to fill those empty spots. And we need to detain more of these perps for longer.
Stricter penalties for gun violations.

There are lot more crimes than those involving guns.

The most egregious ones involve guns.

You are correct, in most cases the problems aren't law changes but rather the mayor and prosecutor declaring that they won't enforce certain laws and are making changes to police procedures.

In short, after 2020 law enforcement and prosecution went a lot more "hands off", because you can literally have an extra 200 (almost all non-white) murders a year like Chicago did and not catch any heat like you get from one cop shooting.

Also, I think a major problem was the court backlog from COVID so prosecutors started doing lopsided plea deals of misdemeanors or just dropped charges on felonies.

Only if Foxx's replacement is an improvement but like we've seen with the new Mayor...voters (mostly south side) apparently have not had enough crime ravage their neighborhoods to come around yet.

P.S. I wonder if they're going to ever upgrade charges on the 14 and 17yo that stole a car and killed that couples baby in a crash back in April. Misdemeanors? Seriously?

Mayor and cops have no control over sentencing. There a cases of people arrested on gun charges, released 6 months later to commit murder

Correct. Cops' jobs are to catch people, not to try them, detain them, etc. Different department.

If anything it was the Luxury Leftists in the leafy north side neighborhoods who put Johnson over the edge. That's definitely where most of his votes came from to push him into the runoff against Valas.

And idiotic pursuit policies have hamstrung their ability to do their one job.

Luxury Leftist in Leafy Lakeview (just for the alliteration)....is very accurate.

I had a kid, probably 23, come to my door BEGGING me to vote for Brandon as if his life depended on it. Like Vallas would have been a huge horrible problem or something. That progressive effort was really in force.

At that time, I lived in Lincoln Square. Leafy Leland Avenue.

And right on cue: Chicago police warn about armed robbers they were ordered to stop chasing; some victims waited hours for CPD to show up
"One of those units spotted the robbers’ newer white Nissan bearing a stolen license plate heading toward the Ontario feeder ramp in River North around 5:50 a.m. Officers said they engaged the vehicle in a pursuit, but a CPD sergeant ordered them to terminate that effort.

"Note the comments after the termination is given as an officer jokes that someone should call the 'real police' at the Illinois State Police, an agency that is known to vigorously chase violent offenders that the Chicago Police Department won’t.
