I am not set on a neighborhood yet; I started narrowing the search down before I had serious job prospects. In my line of work (nonprofit management) there seem to be more viable options in Uptown so I am willing to adjust my apartment search as necessary.

Lakeview and Lincoln Park are neighborhoods I like but the main problem with those areas was finding a place within my budget. I had not considered Edgewater at all, but I will price out some places in that area as well - thank you for the suggestion. I am hoping to spend around 1000/month on rent and utilities (for a studio or one bedroom).

I'm not searching for a hipster vibe at all, my goals are safe and affordable.

It makes no sense to live in Wicker Park/Bucktown if you are going to commute to Uptown. You'd be much better off along the northern lakefront with close access to the Red Line. It's a major P.I.T.A. to take the Blue Line downtown, transfer to the Red, and come back north.

Why not move to Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Edgewater, etc? Are you really hoping for that hipster vibe?
