Hi.

I am thinking of moving to Chicago and have a Pit Bull Mix.

Can anyone tell me what the attitude in Chicago is to these types of dogs? Are they allowed in dog runs? Are there any breed specific laws?

Thanks!!

You'll be fine. No breed specific laws, nor did I even see breed restrictions on apartments or anything. The attitudes there are much better than say, in Tampa, where I am for the year.

There are a lot of dog parks and there have been pit bulls in them. I've never seen anyone have a bad attitude towards any well socialized dog in the park, but you always have the 1 owner with a dog that can't play well, which can be frustrating. If your dog is nice, no one will care!

When you move to Chicago, you do need to register your dog with the city and also get your dog a dog park license (it's like $5). They just make sure that it has it's shots and what not.

Default Glad someone finally brought this up

I've looked a couple of times trying to find out about licenses and couldn't find a single thing on chicago city website...(granted I've only looked once). What's the best way to go about getting a license for the dog (who do you contact etc).

Thanks

Urgh...so I thought it may be the same or worse in the City.

As a dog owner, (I don't have a pit bull) but I've never heard of any restrictions and have seen pit bulls. Please search this forum for info on licenses and dog parks. You can take your vet records to a vet in the city and they will give you registration forms and the dog park license.

You can get a dog license at Petsmart or wherever. Licenses, shots and leashes are required; as is picking up after a dog -- not just curbing it. Just take some plastic bags with you on walks or look for an empty potato chip bag.

Remember that the alleys are baited for rats so if your dog goes nosing around there it may be poisoned. On the north side there is a beach for dogs and a playground -- Wiggly Field. South there are some less formal places where dog owners congregate.

If you live in an apartment please be thoughtful to if your dog barks all day while you are gone. You can get saying or neutering done for free.

Check out the city animal website:
