The Public League is taking drastic measures to curb a rash of violence that has erupted at its basketball games in the last week.

Chicago Public Schools director of sports administration Calvin Davis told the Tribune late Thursday that three changes would be implemented for the rest of the season:
•All varsity boys basketball games will begin at 4 p.m.
•Fans from the visiting team will not be allowed to attend.
•In some cases in which there has been a history of trouble between schools, no fans will be allowed to attend the game.
On Tuesday night, North Lawndale forward Jermaine Winfield was shot in the leg during a postgame altercation in which Winfield came to the aid of a teammate.
Also Tuesday, the Simeon-Bogan game was halted in the fourth quarter when a fight erupted in the stands.
Just after North Lawndale beat Marshall on Thursday night, a fight between two female students turned into a bigger disturbance, with a police call for assistance resulting in eight squad cars and two paddy wagons being dispatched to Marshall.

Well if nobody's around there's probably not going to be any violence.
This just showcases how desperate and helpless they are dealing with the problems at CPS.

Either last year or the year before, the Serie A, the Italian soccer version of the NFL, banned spectators for an entire season because of riots. Since then, they have allowed fans back into games, and violence has gone way down. Maybe you just have to show that certain behaviors are unacceptable.

a very sad state of affairs. so many people are being punished b/c of the actions of a few.

the city of Chicago can't even protect kids in Chicago from violence during a sporting event; I don't have much hope about them protecting VAST amounts of visiting fans during the largest sporting event in the world

ETA: I know it isn't fair to place all the blame on the city (I remember something similar happening at a hockey game in MA where two parents attacked each other), and I know money would be pumped into the city if it gets the vote, but still, I can't help but to draw that conclusion

Whats the shame is parent/s don't instill values into their children so that they conduct themselves as law abiding citizens.
Not the city's job.

Will this stop the violence at school games?

Nope.

I disagree.

It is a sad commentary on the state of specific neighborhoods and demographic groups that happen to live in the city.

That kind of crap does not happen (or happen often) in about two thirds of the city at least.

the city should know by now that these are mostly sh*tty parents and put provisions in place to protect these kids from themselves. this should have happened again after the first incident.

I'm all for laying it all on the parents, but the current generation is far beyond listening to Mommy and assuming some of these parents are going to step up now when their kid's in high school is silly. sadly, at some point, the city needs to step in and take over the reins from bad parenting
