well I was hoping the commute would be under 30 minutes

The bus is definitely not any slower than a car during rush hour. From Taylor to Diversey the travel time is up to 35 min during the worst part of rush hour. Otherwise it's more like 25-30 mins or even as little as 15 mins if you go at 3 am.

Sure whatever you say buddy. I have made the drive a thousand times from the UIC area to Lincoln Park during rush hour.

Most of the time I end up passing at least two CTA buses and leave them in the dust.

Commuting to UIC from Lincoln Park should not be too bad. Again, the quickest way I would say would be a bus route straight down Halsted. The CTA planner gives about 24 minutes from Halsted and Fullerton (the main street I think of when I think Lincoln Park but I'm sure there are more stops in LP on the bus route) to Halsted and Harrison, one of I think two or three UIC stops. And those stops let off right on the UIC campus.

If you have any other UIC questions, I could try to answer as best as I can.
A bus route straight down Halsted? Forget it. Halsted is a local bus, not a commuter bus. It stops every block and it's only one lane in each direction almost the entire way, meaning you're lurching along in slow-moving traffic unless it's before 7am or after 7pm.

Quickest route from LP to UIC is to take the Red Line to Jackson, transfer to the Blue Line, take it to UIC, and voila.

Myssa,
If you don't want to hear both the good and bad of a place and if you scare this easily, I definitely wouldn't look at other city-data forums of placing you're considering. I suspect you'll end up getting scared of them all.

It's scary as hell -- believe me. I'm no Chicago native, and I had a lot of people tell me I shouldn't move up here, but there are good and bad things about every place.

Actually, go over to your Houston forum and read the first page of posts -- there's stuff about crime, about bad police officers, about hurricanes ... if you didn't already live there, would you be fearful of it after that?
