San Francisco's trolleys are the epitome of "light" rail.

Its passenger capacity and speed. Heavy rail can contain many more passengers at much faster speeds than light rail.

Although the speed thing isnt really applicable on most of the North Side red line .

Compare the blue line or brown line to light rail systems in Minneapolis or Denver and you'll see a stark difference.

The only major US cities with extensive heavy rail systems are New York, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta and DC. Minus the last two, all of those cities have very old and historic systems. The trend for smaller cities has been to use light rail.
