Hello friends, just wanted to touch base with you on a subject that is heating up on the Pittsburgh boards. In the city of Pittsburgh, those who have to park on the city streets will place a chair or some other ridiculous object to save their spot when they leave. Those who support this feel if they spent hours shovelling snow off of the spot that they have rights to it. I think it's ridiculous, there are certain facts you have to face when parking on the street.

So does this happen in Chicago? If so, do residents respect this?

Yes, it is done in Chicago. I live on residential street where it's done every winter. I am against it, myself.

I am too. Do people respect it in general, or not?

It seems like they do, yes. Personally, I don't take the "reserved" spots, but I do think it is silly.

It is generally respected in my neighborhood, but it is a stupid tradition.

It gets more pitiful every year, frankly. When I was a kid, it wasn't chairs, it was big stuff like couches, washing machines - things that said "hey, I worked my butt off to shovel out this spot."

yesterday I saw two of my lazy neighbors put chairs in spaces after they just pulled out - that's just wrong. I also note neither of these yoyos bothered to shovel the sidewalks.

Not to mention that they are slow to remove anything they leave in the spots. I've seen chairs, etc. still guarding spots in April. They don't own them for goodness sake!

I heard about people doing this when I moved to Chicago the other year. I mentioned it to a neighbor of mine and he said that that was banned in the city? I've heard of this being done but I haven't seen it as far as I've been here...

Even if someone did "reserve" a spot, I don't think I'd dare take it for fear of car-retaliation when the reserver gets back.

See, that's just ignant.

Depending on how big/likely to kill you they are, I'd be tempted to park there, with a note saying you should shovel a spot & your sidewalks before you can claim it.
